Charoula Stathopoulou is a Professor of Didactics of Mathematics in the Department of Special Education at the University of Thessaly. She is director of the laboratory “Mathematics literacy in formal and informal contexts” and vice-president in the Research Committee. She teaches Basic Notions and Techniques of Mathematics, Didactics of Mathematics, Applied Didactics of Mathematics, Main Geometrical Concepts and Their Teaching, Ethnomathematics: Mathematics learning and students’ cultural background. Professor Stathopoulou completed a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and pursued additional postgraduate study in the Didactics and Methodology of Mathematics at the University of Athens. She studied Social Anthropology and completed her doctorate in Ethnomathematics at the Aegean University.
Her main research foci include: Ethnomathematics and in general the exploration of Sociocultural Factors on Mathematics teaching/learning in and out of school, school mathematics literacy and multiliteracies, (Mathematics) education and vulnerable groups, the language on mathematics teaching, the culture of Mathematics classroom (sociocultural interactions), use of CTI and Drama in education on mathematics teaching, Mathematics teaching and students with special educational needs, teachers education.

She is member of national and international scientific associations (ENEDIM, HMS, MES, CIEAEM, ISGEm), and was invited to become an official member of CIEAEM (International Commission for the Study and Improvement of Mathematics Teaching) in July, 2013 and the coordinator of Ethnomathematics goupr for Greece. Dr. Stathopoulou has been a reviewer of a lot Greek and international conferences and of the journals: Journal of Applied & Computational Mathematics, International Electronic Journal of Mathematics Education, ZDM, Journal of Research in Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, Euclid III, Research in Mathematics Education. Also she is a member of editorial team in the following journals: «International Journal for Mathematics in Education”, "Euclid III," "Critical Science and Education", “Research in Mathematics Education” (co-editor).
Professor Stathopoulou had published more than 130 papers in international and Greek journals, volumes and conference proceedings that are indexed in international databases with citations in Greece and international literature. She is the author of, «Ethnomathematics: Exploring the cultural dimension of both mathematics and mathematics education” and co-author of “Interaction between mathematics education and school failure: An engineering educational approach focusing on the case of the multi-island complex of the Dodecanese”.
